Music Recap Jan. 24’: The Year of Resurgence?

This year is proving to be the year of resurgence in the music industry especially in Rap and Hip Hop. There are rumors that Hip Hop artist, Jay Z, is supposed to drop an album this year after having not released since the 2018 album Everything Is Love with his wife, R&B artist and Pop Icon, Beyoncé and we have rappers who have already caused waves in the music industry this year. Rap artist, Key Glock, kicks things off with song “Let’s Go” showing his mainstream and theatrical side. “Let’s Go” is a very catchy, TikTok hit. The song is about getting money, of course, and would be perfect for an action film. Maybe that’s why his video was all “Bonnie & Clyde” vibes with actress Alix Lapri from Power Book II: Ghost. This is definitely a different look for the independent Memphis artist. After tragically losing his cousin, independent Memphis rap artist,Young Dolph, to what people believe to be senseless rap beef in 2021, the rapper Key Glock is showing he has something to prove.

The same can be said about Houston rap artist, Meg Thee Stallion, who seems to not be able to catch a break, these last couple of years, with issues with her label, relationships, and other artists. Thee Stallion decided to address everything on the mic in what fans believe to be a diss track entitled “Hiss.” The track has no hook, just bars! It starts off with Meg stating, “…I’m finna get this s*** off my chest and lay it to rest.” Ms. Tina Snow did just that with popular bars, such as, “These h**** don’t be mad at Megan, these h*** mad at Megan’s Law.” On an initial listen, one may think it is a simple line but it has a much deeper meaning. Fans believe it was addressed at Nicki Minaj who is ‘beefing’ with Meg’s close friend, rapper Cardi B. Also, Nicki’s husband is, allegedly, on the sex offender list and Megan’s Law is a law that was introduced in 1994 where the public has to be notified about registered sex offenders. Meg never said any names but Nicki seemed to take offense and went on a twitter rant and decided to drop a diss track within a day called “Big Foot” and the only thing that can be said about the track is that one can definitely tell that it was made in a day. Let’s not forget about Meg’s visual for “Hiss,” which starts off with Meg being in a snake’s eggshell and ending with Meg having platinum blonde hair with silver jewelry and outfits which many believe is supposed to depict Tina Snow which is Meg’s real name. A snake’s hiss is used when they feel threatened, angry, or annoyed, so Meg is hissing and telling everyone to not mess with Ms.Tina Snow.

What a way to kick off 2024! It’s brave to release in the month of January and more artist should do it because the albums and songs released in January will be competing with albums and songs for the remainder of the year. Who will top Key Glocks’ “movie” and Meg’s lyrics?
